아버지의 기도
주여, 제 아들을 이런 사람이 되게 하소서.
약할 때 자신을 분별할 수 있는 힘과
두려울 때 자신을 잃지 않는 용기를 주소서.
정직한 패배 앞에 당당하고 태연하며,
승리에 겸손하고 온유한 사람이 되게 하소서.
그를 요행과 안락의 길로 인도하지 마시고
곤란과 고통의 길에서 항거할 줄 알게 하소서,
폭품우 속에서도 일어설줄 알며
패한자를 불쌍히 여길 줄 알도록 해 주소서.
그의 마음은 깨끗 하고 그의 목표는 드높게 하소서.
남을 다스리기 전에 자신을 다스리게 하시며,
미래를 지향하는 동시에 과거를 잊지 않게 하시고,
웃을줄 알면서도, 우는 법을 잊지 않게 하소서.
인생을 엄숙하고 진지하게 살면서도
삶을 즐길줄 아는 유머를 갖게 하시고
자기 자신을 너무 드러내지 않고
겸손한 마음을 갖게 하소서.
그리고
참으로 위대한 것은 소박한 데에 있다는 것과
진정한 지혜는 열려진 마음속에,
참된 힘은 너그러움에 있다는 것을
항상 명심하도록 하소서.
그리하여 그의 아비인 저는,
헛된 인생을 살지 않았노라고
나직이 속삭이게 하소서.

who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid;

Build me a son

a son who will know Thee
and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.
Lead him, I pray,
not in the path of ease and comfort,
but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
Here let him learn to stand up in the storm;
here let him learn compassion for those who fail.
Build me a son whose heart will be clean,
whose goal will be high;
a son who will master himself
before he seeks to master other men;
one who will learn to laugh,
yet never forget how to weep;
one who will reach into the future,
yet never forget the past.
And after all these things are his,
add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,
so that he may always be serious,
yet never take himself too seriously.
Give him humility,
so that he may always remember the simplicity of greatness,
the open mind of true wisdom,
the meekness of true strength.
Then I, his father, will dare to whisper,
"I have not lived in vain".
